Anxiety Therapy London: FAQs
Understanding Anxiety & Therapy
Anxiety signs and symptoms may include:
- Feeling breathless, choked up and unable to speak
- Feeling dizzy and unsteady on your feet
- Numbness, tingling or tightness around the mouth and throat
- Nausea, stomach knots or feeling sick to your stomach
- Shakiness in your body (e.g. trembling hands and legs)
- Easily irritated and annoyed – anything and anyone can make you ‘snap’
- Increasingly feeling nervous, apprehensive and ‘on edge’
- Panic attacks or hyperventilation
- Fearful, unsettled and wary of change and anything new
- Overwhelming roller coaster of emotions and unable to cope
Stress
Stress is the body’s natural response to demands, pressure, and perceived threats. In the short term, it can be helpful – giving you a surge of adrenaline to stay alert, focused, and responsive to challenges. But when stress becomes chronic, it can take a toll on both your mental and physical health, leading to increased tension, irritability, fatigue, and an overactive nervous system that keeps you in a constant state of alertness.
Anxiety
Anxiety is that ongoing feeling of worry or fear that can linger beyond the immediate stressor. It may show up as overthinking about the past, feeling overwhelmed by what’s happening in the present, or worrying about the future – even when there’s no clear reason. It can make it difficult to switch off, relax, or feel fully present. Even without a clear trigger, anxiety can keep your mind and body in a heightened state of alert, making it hard to feel at ease.
Burnout
Burnout is a state of physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion caused by prolonged exposure to high stress at work. It goes beyond simply feeling tired. Burnout, as defined by the World Health Organization, includes three main dimensions: feeling physically and emotionally drained (exhaustion), becoming distant or disengaged from your work (cynicism), and struggling to perform at your usual level of effectiveness (reduced professional efficacy).
We support individuals experiencing various forms of anxiety, from general anxiety to more specific, work-related concerns.
Anxiety can show up in many different ways, such as the fear of making mistakes, worry about performance, or pressure to meet high standards. We also work with social anxiety, perfectionism, Imposter Syndrome, and the anxiety that stems from self-doubt and concerns about how others may perceive you.
Additionally, we specialise in supporting those affected by workplace trauma, including secondary traumatic stress and vicarious trauma, where repeated exposure to distressing situations can leave you feeling overwhelmed, fearful, and disconnected.
Whether it’s the fear of judgment, the pressure to get everything right, or anxiety about your role and its impact on others, we are here to help you understand and find healthier ways of coping in a supportive and compassionate way.
We support people with anxiety in a trauma-informed way, meaning we recognise how life experiences shape mental health – without labelling or diagnosing.
Our approach is humanistic, person-centred, and compassion-focused. We go beyond addressing thoughts and behaviours, understanding that anxiety can be deeply felt in the body, impact relationships, and connect to self-worth, identity, and a sense of safety.
While we offer practical tools – like self-regulation exercises, mindfulness, and embodied practices – we also work on a deeper level to explore and process what’s underneath. This includes psychotherapeutic approaches such as relational, psychoanalytic, psychodynamic, and creative arts psychotherapies, which help uncover patterns and make sense of experiences.
Our approach isn’t to ‘fix’ anxiety but to create space for self-understanding, trust, and meaning – so healing feels safe, supported, and lasting.
YTherapy is the UK’s only psychotherapy and wellness service dedicated to ‘helping the helpers’. We’re an independent mental health service specialising in supporting professionals in high-pressure, frontline roles who are affected by anxiety, burnout, and trauma. Our approach focuses on helping you address both the challenges you face in your work and your personal well-being, finding sustainable ways to care for yourself. Whether it’s finding healthier ways to cope with stress or healing from trauma, we’re here to help you stay balanced, so you can continue making a difference while thriving personally and professionally.
Support for Frontline Workers & Helping Professionals
Our anxiety therapy is for professionals experiencing anxiety related to work stress, personal challenges, or a combination of both. Whether you’re dealing with stress from your job or personal anxiety that’s been triggered by your work environment, therapy can help. Therapy can help you manage the impact of stress and anxiety, whether it’s temporary or has been lingering for some time.
We understand that the pressures of high-responsibility roles, exposure to trauma, or managing sensitive situations can deeply affect both your work and personal life. Our therapy is designed to support you in navigating these challenges, helping you build resilience and find healthy coping strategies. Whether you’re going through a tough period or dealing with longer-term struggles, we’re here to help you feel better.
We support a wide range of professionals working in high-stress, high-responsibility, and trauma-exposed roles. Whether you’re on the front lines, behind a screen, or leading operations, you may face intense stress and be exposed to sensitive content or traumatic material. We’ve worked with healthcare workers, social workers, first responders, lawyers, law enforcement officers, content moderators, crisis helpline workers, journalists, child protection officers, humanitarian aid workers, and even other therapists.
If your work involves high responsibility, crisis intervention, or exposure to distressing situations and others’ trauma, therapy can help you process the impact and build resilience. You don’t need to be in crisis to benefit. If stress or anxiety is affecting you, we’re here to support you.
Therapy can help you manage and reduce work-related anxiety by providing you with tools to better understand and cope with stressors in your work environment. Whether it’s dealing with the emotional impact of secondary trauma, managing overwhelming workloads, or navigating the pressure of high-stakes situations, therapy offers a safe space to explore and process these challenges.
It can also help with anxiety or other mental health challenges that may have existed before your work or have developed as a result of it. We can explore how these issues may be affecting your work and provide support to address any barriers they create. Ultimately, therapy helps you create a balanced approach to both your work and personal well-being.
No, having anxiety does not mean you’re weak.
Anxiety is a natural response to stress, especially in high-pressure environments. It’s your body’s way of helping you navigate moments of heightened challenge, like when you’re managing a crisis or dealing with sensitive situations. Feeling anxious in these circumstances doesn’t make you weak – it shows that you’re human and care deeply about your work.
However, in high-stress jobs, this anxiety can sometimes become overwhelming, affecting both your well-being and your ability to perform. We understand that your work continuously presents new challenges, and we’re here to help you navigate this ongoing process of balancing your well-being with your responsibilities.
No, not at all. It’s normal to experience anxiety in high-pressure jobs, but that doesn’t mean you should have to “deal with” it on your own. Many people start therapy before burnout hits because they want to prevent it from getting worse.
Seeking help early is a sign of strength, not weakness. It’s about taking care of yourself and not neglecting your mental health, even when other priorities feel urgent. When you’re safe and well, you can thrive both personally and professionally.
What to Expect from Therapy
A therapy session is 50 minutes in duration.
This gives you time to engage in the process and also space to transition to the next part of your day.
Everyone’s journey is different. The length of therapy can vary depending on your challenges with anxiety and the goals you’d like to work on. Many clients begin to feel some relief within a few sessions. However, deeper, lasting change takes time. Building trust and rapport with your therapist is also an essential part of the process. If you’re seeking to understand the root causes of your anxiety and build lasting resilience, it may take several months.
Progress in therapy can be gradual, but sometimes it can feel quicker. It’s normal to feel challenged or even more anxious at first, but you might also experience relief early on. Over time, you may notice improvements in how you understand and manage your anxiety, and develop healthier coping skills along the way. You might find it easier to handle discomfort or see changes in how you think about and respond to anxiety. Therapy can help reduce the intensity of anxiety, break unhelpful patterns, and bring a greater sense of calm. The key is to notice any changes, even the small ones, in how you feel and respond to anxiety.
Your first session is a 50-minute initial consultation, available either in-person or online. During this consultation, you’ll have the opportunity to share more about your situation, explore your current challenges and goals, and get a sense of how your therapist can support you. This will allow you to experience the therapy process firsthand, helping you make an informed decision about whether you’d like to continue and move forward together.
No, you do not need a formal diagnosis to begin therapy with us. Unlike some Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) or insurance providers, who may require a diagnosis, GP referral, or assessment paperwork to determine eligibility, we do not have those requirements.
With our private therapy service, you can start therapy without needing a formal diagnosis or GP referral. If you’re experiencing anxiety or any other mental health concern, you can begin therapy as soon as you’re ready to seek support.
Yes, absolutely. We encourage you to book a free consultation. This gives you the chance to ask any questions, share a bit about your situation, and get a feel for how we work. It’s a great way to ensure you feel comfortable with us before committing to therapy.
The first step is to schedule a free consultation, where we’ll discuss your needs and answer any questions. After that, we’ll schedule your first appointment and begin creating a personalised therapy plan to support you.
Therapy Costs, Confidentiality & Scheduling
Yes, your therapy is private, and confidentiality is between you and YTherapy. As registered therapists, we are bound by our registration’s Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct, and we follow strict confidentiality guidelines.
We are committed to keeping your personal data safe and comply with the Data Protection Act (UK) and General Data Protection Regulation (UK & EU GDPR).
Confidentiality is essential in therapy, but it has limits. If there is a serious risk to your safety or others, or if required by law, we may need to share information as part of our duty as therapists.
If you have any questions about how we ensure your privacy and confidentiality, please refer to our Privacy Policy and Client Terms.
Yes, we offer both in-person therapy in London and online therapy for professionals. The format will be based on your location and what works best for your needs and situation. If you’re based in London but prefer online sessions or need a combination of both, we can accommodate this where possible.
Our London office is located at Token House, 11-12 Tokenhouse Yard, London, EC2R 7AS, in the heart of The City. It’s just a few minutes walk from nearby stations including Moorgate, Liverpool Street, and Bank.
Please note that in-person sessions are by appointment only.
Yes, we work with clients based outside of the UK. While our insurance allows us to work with clients in many countries, we also assess whether the nature of your needs and available resources make remote therapy the most suitable option for you. Some locations may have specific restrictions, so it’s important to discuss your particular circumstances. Please reach out to us to schedule a consultation, and we’ll explore how we can best support you.
We understand that in your line of work, your schedule can often be unpredictable. Our aim is to support you in prioritising your mental health and well-being by creating a regular, consistent therapy schedule that works for you. Once we’ve established a regular day and time for your sessions, there’s flexibility within that to accommodate occasional changes if needed. However, maintaining consistency in your sessions is important for the therapeutic process to be most effective.
A therapy session costs £150.00 GBP. This fee reflects the specialised approach we take, the resources we provide, and our commitment to upholding high ethical and clinical standards in our work.
Unfortunately, we are considered out-of-network therapists and do not have direct agreements with private health insurers. However, some insurance providers may offer reimbursement for therapy sessions if you choose to work with a therapist outside their network. Please check with your insurer to see if this is an option for you.
Yes, in some cases, employers can cover the cost of therapy. Some of our clients have personal arrangements with their employers to fund part or all of their sessions, while others access therapy through our corporate workplace therapy programme, where employers partner with us to provide therapy as part of employee wellness benefits. If you’re interested in finding out more, please get in touch, and we’ll discuss how we can support you.
Yes, your therapy remains confidential, even if your employer is covering the cost. Your personal information and what you share with us in your therapy sessions will not be shared with your employer. If your employer is funding therapy through our corporate workplace therapy programme, we will have a clear agreement in place to protect your privacy. We maintain confidentiality regardless of who is funding the therapy.
